Summer Heat and Keeping Baby Cool

Hello Summer. Finally we have some nice weather and as much as we may have wished for more sunshine; as a parent, it comes with it’s worries (aside from the fear of showing our white winter limbs in public).

To help reduce any anxieties or worries you may have, I have shared some of my top tips on keeping you baby safe and cool during the hotter weather.

  • Close blinds and curtain's during the day - Keep the room dark and cool by blocking out direct sunlight and heat that comes with it.

  • Introduce a fan - If your little one's room get's very hot, consider introducing a fan to help cool things down. It's important to ensure the fan always point's away from your baby.

  • Less is more - Significantly reduce clothing and covers on the hotter days/nights. Your aim is to keep baby as cool as possible and sometimes having them only sleep in their nappy is the quickest way to do so.

  • Stay hydrated - Increase amount of feeds if baby has not yet started weaning. Breastmilk is super intelligent and modifies on warmer days to meet babies needs and you can give formula fed babies sips of cooled boiled water. 6+ month babies can get more water or water rich foods such as cucumber, melon and strawberries.

  • Stay shaded - When outside, use a parasol/sunshade on the pram that allows good ventilation and offers full shading to your baby. Sit the pram out of direct sunlight when stationary and never cover pram with a muslin or blanket as it can greatly increase the risk of overheating.

  • Regularly check babies temperature - You can do this easily by visually looking for flushed cheeks, sweating etc. and by checking their chest or back of neck. This will give you a good indication of how warm/cool they are.
